In the highlands of Sidama, Tamiru Tadesse and his wife Messi built Alo Coffee around a belief in greater recognition for local producers. Their first submission from their home village of Alo, Bensa, won Ethiopia’s Cup of Excellence in 2021, proving what dedication, careful processing, and a commitment to quality can achieve.

Alo Coffee works closely with producers around Bensa, creating greater opportunities for farmers to have their coffees recognised beyond the local market. Tamiru and Messi’s approach places particular emphasis on careful harvesting, processing, and maintaining quality from cherry selection through to drying. Their work has helped bring greater attention to the potential of coffees from their home community.
The 2021 Cup of Excellence win marked an important milestone for Alo Coffee, but also reflected the potential of the producers behind it. Their coffees demonstrate how thoughtful processing and close attention to quality can transform locally grown coffee into something capable of competing on an international stage.
