El Descanso

El Descanso

Guadalupe, Huila hosts El Descanso, a 7-hectare farm led by second-generation grower Jose Heider Contreras. At 1,600 meters, 20,000 Castillo and Bourbon Rosado trees ripen with balance and depth. Cherries are handpicked, dry-fermented for 36 hours, then washed and dried slowly in a marquesina. The result is a sweet, complex cup that reflects both Huila’s land and its farmers.

Jose Heider’s approach to farming is rooted in precision and respect for the land his family has cultivated for decades. He meticulously monitors every stage of production — from selective picking to controlled fermentation — ensuring that each batch expresses the full potential of his varieties. The farm’s elevation and microclimate bring a harmonious interplay of cool nights and warm days, allowing sugars to develop gradually within the cherries. This careful balance translates into a cup layered with red fruit sweetness, gentle florals, and a crisp, structured acidity that defines the best of Huila.

Beyond coffee quality, El Descanso stands as a model of sustainability and generational stewardship. Jose Heider invests in soil regeneration, shade management, and water conservation, fostering long-term farm health while preserving biodiversity. He also collaborates with neighboring producers to share best practices and promote continuous improvement across the region. Through his dedication, El Descanso embodies the evolving story of Colombian coffee — where tradition meets innovation, and excellence begins at the source.
